Currency converter
Convert currencies using live exchange rates.
Rate source: open.er-api.com (free real-time rates). Actual exchange may differ depending on bank quotes and fees.
You are staring at a checkout page that says 39.99 USD, or a hotel listing priced at 18,000 JPY, and the mental arithmetic never quite lands. This converter takes an amount and two currencies and returns the figure at the latest market rate. It works currency-to-currency as well — yen to dollars, euros to pounds — and it shows you when the rate it used was last updated.
How it works
How to use it
Type the number into Amount (it starts at 1). From currency is the money you are holding; To currency is the money you want to know about. Press Convert and you get the converted figure plus the unit rate in the form 1 from-currency = ? to-currency. Swap currencies flips the two fields if you want to read it the other way round.
Fifteen currencies are supported: KRW, USD, JPY, EUR, CNY, GBP, AUD, CAD, HKD, CHF, SGD, THB, VND, TWD and INR. Neither side has to be your home currency, so cross rates such as JPY to USD are calculated directly.
Which rate is used
The tool pulls market reference rates from an external rates API (open.er-api.com). That is the mid-market number before anyone adds a margin — not the price a bank charges you at the counter.
| Rate type | What it reflects |
|---|---|
| Market rate (this tool) | The reference level before fees |
| Bank base rate | A bank's published rate for the day |
| Cash purchase / card billing | The above plus spread and fees |
So the amount you actually pay is usually a little higher than the figure shown here.
Check the timestamp
The time shown under the result is when that rate was last refreshed. Rates move continuously, so treat this as an estimate. For anything where real money moves — a transfer, a currency exchange, a large purchase — confirm the rate with the institution handling the transaction.
Terms explained
- From currency
- The currency you are converting out of — the money you currently hold.
- To currency
- The currency you want the result in.
- Rate timestamp
- When the rate used in the calculation was last refreshed. An old timestamp means the figure may have drifted.
- Mid-market rate
- The reference rate between buying and selling prices, before any fee is added. This is what the tool uses.
- Spread
- The gap between the reference rate and the price you are actually offered. Exchange fees live here.
- Currency code
- The three-letter ISO code for a currency, such as USD or JPY.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the result different from my bank's rate?
This tool uses the mid-market rate, before fees. Banks and card issuers add a spread and a service fee on top, so the amount you actually pay is normally somewhat higher. Check the published rate of the institution you are transacting with for the exact figure.
How often are the rates updated?
Rates come from an external data provider, and the refresh interval depends on that provider. The timestamp displayed beneath the result tells you exactly how current the number is, so judge freshness from that rather than assuming it is second-by-second.
Can I convert between two foreign currencies?
Yes. Set both fields to non-local currencies and the conversion is done directly — yen to dollars, euros to pounds — without routing through any intermediate currency.
What will my card actually be billed when I pay abroad?
Your card issuer applies its own rate on the settlement date and adds a foreign transaction fee. Because the settlement date can differ from the purchase date, the final billed amount often differs slightly from the figure here.
The tool says it cannot load rates.
Rates are fetched live from an external service, so a dropped connection or a corporate firewall or security tool blocking outbound requests will stop the lookup. Check your network and try again.
